I like viperdragon's idea to her awesome layout and decided to add on to it, but kinda different. Here are some rules that I unfortunately see in some of the role players here. So if you do not understand them, please post. ^^
Punctuations
I sometimes see no punctuations after full sentences. I know all of you know know how to do punctuations, so be really cautious to make sure you do it. You're just lazy, and all of us are. I would suggest you read over it and fill in where the punctuations should be. Plus make sure it's the right punctuation, too.
I also see commas, but with no spaces at the ends
Ex:
he turned, stopped, and wondered what they were going to do,too.
Make sure to put spaces after commas. Just do a spell check.
Detail
So, you see this awesome role player rolplaying and you know they're ten times better then you. But don't think that, just by adding some strong metaphors and similes (not smileys...) you can be as good as them, too!
When you say:
The man walked through the town with a mad face away from a restaurant.
Look at all the verbs, and think, What synonyms can replace the verbs I have? Basically, what other verbs mean the same thing and go well. Do it with the adjectives to if needed. Just try a few:
Ex:
The man stomped through the town with a furious expression away from a restaurant.
You can change it how you like, and maybe get it a little bigger. And how to get your posts bigger perhaps is on "Literacy Help?" by viper dragon. Use strong metaphors, verbs, actions and all that good stuff. ;P
Personality in your character
Make sure you put lots of personality into your character. I sometimes and most of the time do my character's personality's as mine is, because it may be easier. You can do otherwise, too. Just make sure you pack all the character you can and personality.
Put all your statements and feelings in your post if you're doing a character as your personality.
If not, imagine the landscape and where your character is. Think about his/her feelings and how he/she might react to what's happening.
Bad Ex:
The girl wolf looked at the waterfall and moved her paws. Then she went to sleep.
And with some "tweaking" and details, and personality it could become,
The fae wolf gazed at the gorgeous waterfall and shifted her paws. She smiled warmly and closed her eyes slowly. Her heavy eyelids fell into place and she drifted off.
Said, said, said
Said is used a lot. But do the same theory that I showed you, think of what else could you use to make this bland said better as in:
Cackled
sputtered
snapped
cried
(Believe me, there's more, but I won't list all of them.)
Just put what goes with what she said.
Ex: "I hate it!" cried the toddler.
Or something like that.
Be sure to add:
Punctuations
Strong Detail, gets it exciting
Great personality
Good words
Do a spell check afterwords.
Actually, do not only a spell check but also hunt for the bad grammer you might have in there.
A good way to learn new words is to read a literate post (Probably somewhere in this site) and look at the words closely and perhaps use a couple in your post. But DO NOT copy it! That's illegal, peoples. Don't copy other people's writing.
Quotations
I don't think I'm seeing a problem with quotations but I can say this to you.
Don't use too much quotes.
Think of it as seasoning. "Sprinkle" your post with quotations.
Once you've got all these things packed into your post, look it over, and you should be satisfied of how you've improved.
